Abstract:
The “return of religions” in the 1980s changed the paradigm of a secular modernity in the social and cultural sciences. Due to the activities of politicized religious actors scientific research is mainly focusing on the relationship between religion and politics and on a political science perspective. Less attention is paid to the so-called emic perspective of believers, to their ideas of a pious life and their daily practices as individuals and as members of a devout community. Implicitly new religious organizations, movements and communities include an irresolvable contradiction. On the one hand they oppose individualism and criticize the fragmentation of the modern world; on the other hand they implicitly contribute to these processes by undermining established religious, familial and political authorities. Paradoxically, the new “world in disorder” integrates even those who claim to counteract the “multiple modernities”. We wish to discuss the various dimensions of Islam religious modernity in Southeast Asia with a particular emphasis on conjunction of the global and the local, on differences between discourse and practice, and on the relationship between the individual and the group. We invite speakers who do research on religious lifestyles within Islamic movements, communities and organizations in Southeast Asia. Topics to be addressed might include “power relations”, “individuality” “socialization”, “cultural performance”, “media”, “myths and justification narratives”, “gender” and “consumerism”.
