Human ecology is a subject area within the School of Global Studies.
Human ecology is a socially-orientated, environmental science that studies the interplay between human society and natural environments with the aim of producing knowledge necessary for sustainable development.
Interest is focused on how human beings influence and exploit their surroundings and how the natural resource base is affected and sets limits on human activity.
Human ecology looks for the reasons behind environmental problems and ways to solve them, and studies how they interact with social problems such as poverty, inequality and non-sustainable use of resources.
Studies are conducted along various temporal and spatial scales and are often focused on local-global connections.
Human ecology applies interdisciplinary methods that bridges traditional subject boundaries between and within social sciences, humanities, natural- and technical sciences and the surrounding society.
